What to Expect

Preparation for surgery:
Preparing for your surgery can make the day of surgery less stressful. Preadmission lab work will be determined by your surgeon. It is important to make sure you have a friend or relative to drive you home after your surgery as well as someone to stay with you the first night following surgery. 

Prior to your surgery:
Your doctor will explain to you what he/she would like you to do prior to your surgery to ensure the best outcome. 

You will also receive a phone call from a Midland Surgical Center staff member.  During that call, the following information will be discussed:

• Confirmation of the date of your surgery and your arrival time. 
• Items you need to bring to the surgical center with you, including:
  • Medical insurance card
  • Photo ID or driver’s license
  • Any equipment your doctor ordered such as crutches, sling, a cooling unit, etc.
• Information about your insurance coverage at Midland Surgical Center.
• A review of those things you need to do before your surgery:
  • If you are on daily medications, speak with your surgeon to determine if you should take them the day of surgery.
  • Make arrangements for someone to drive you home after surgery (you will not be permitted to drive.)
  • Make arrangements for someone to spend the first night with you following your surgical procedure.
  • Take a shower or bath the morning of, or the evening before, your surgery.
  • Bring a list of your current medications including all prescriptions and over-the-counter or herbal supplements.
  • Plan to wear comfortable clothing. 
• Additionally, there are things you should NOT do prior to surgery.
  • DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING after midnight the night before your surgery unless you receive specific instructions from your doctor.
  • Do not bring jewelry or other valuables from home.
  • Do not drink alcohol the evening and night before your surgery.
  • Refrain from or reduce cigarette smoking after midnight the night before surgery.
  • Do not wear make-up, fingernail polish, metal hairpins or clips.

   

  Please do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have about your upcoming surgery. It is our desire that you be as comfortable and informed as possible about your planned procedure. 

Following Your Surgery:

After surgery you will be taken to our post-operative area and cared for by one of our registered nurses. Your friend or family member will be able to join you during this recovery period. When you feel like eating something, a beverage and light snack will be provided. We know you will rest and recover most effectively in your own home. Therefore, we do everything we can to help you return home as soon as possible following surgery.

Before you leave you will receive written instructions detailing your post-surgical care which will include a return appointment to see your surgeon. 

Once you have arrived at home, a nurse from the center will call you to see how you are doing and answer any questions you may have.
